Deputy Permanent Secretary for Finance Chakkrit Parapuntakul has been nominated as chairman of flag carrier Thai Airways International Public Company Ltd.
On Monday, Deputy Transport Minister Thaworn Senneam revealed Parapuntakul’s nomination, a post that will head the airline’s board of directors.
Senneam said that he was optimistic about Thai Airway’s future with Parapuntakul’s nomination.
“Mr. Chakkrit, who has been handling expenses and liabilities of the Finance Ministry, has been nominated for the top job," he said.
“The matter will be decided by the company's shareholders,” he added.
Parapuntakul’s nomination came after Ekniti Nitithaprapas’ resignation due to the airline’s poor financial standing, having incurred a loss of 10 billion baht for this year alone.
“We only need to increase revenues by a little bit to get rid of the red figures,” he said.
Senneam said that the new chairman should be knowledgeable in marketing, and is capable of coming up with new strategies to revive the company and recover foregone revenues.
He said that the new head should also be knowledgeable of procurement laws and information technology.
“The time has come to start thinking of ways to bring [Thai Airways] out of the crisis," Senneam said.
He said that the flag carrier’s cut-throat competition was boosted by the emergence of low-cost carriers.
