The winner of the 10th annual Asian Tour will be rewarded with a reward of half a million US dollars after its main sponsor Bangkok Airways decided to up the prize money for the Queen’s Cup winner by another $200,000.

Bangkok Airways Communications Director Kridhakorn Sirabhabhoj said:

Over the years, the Queen’s Cup has produced many stellar champions and provided inspiration for Thai golfers to achieve their dreams. We are delighted to be given the opportunity to play a leading role in staging this tournament.

He continued:

The Queen’s Cup also provides us with a wonderful platform to promote Koh Samui as a world-class holiday and golf destination. The media and television exposure have been highly effective in promoting these important elements for Bangkok Airways.

Asian Tour Chief Executive Officer Josh Burack said:

It is fantastic to see the prize fund being raised to $500,000 this year. Returning to Koh Samui and Santiburi Samui Country Club will be a treat for our players as it is a fantastic destination.

He also voiced his belief that the event will deliver another exciting week for the fans of golf.

Sakon Wannapong, Governor at Sports Authority of Thailand expressed delight that his organization is supporting the Queen’s Cup this year and commented:

Thai golfers Thaworn, Prayad and Chinnarat Phadungsil have won the Queen’s Cup and inspired many Thai youngsters to take up the game. Victory for a Thai golfer would mean a massive career leap as the winner’s exemption would subsequently open the door to a global stage due to Asian Tour’s successful co-sanction programme with other major international tours.

The first Asian Tour was held in 2009 and since then, two Thai golfers Prayad Marksaeng and Thaworn Wiratchant, along with Tetsuji Hiratsuka from Japan and Scott Hend from Australia won the tournament. Last year’s winner Hend also won the Asian Tour’s Order of Merit crown by defeating Gunn Charoenkul in a one-shot victory. The Australian golfer shot 15-under-par 269 for the win.

The Queen’s Cup is held at the Santibury Samui Country Club and is held in honor of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit.
