Bangkok Airways Launch Flights to Phu Quoc, Vietnam

Starting from 29th October, Bangkok Airways will launch regular flights from its hub at Suvarnabhumi Airport to the increasingly popular Vietnamese island Phu Quoc. The SET-listed carrier will use 70-seat ATR72-600 turboprop jet and will fly between Bangkok and Phu Quoc four times per week.
The airline this way aims to take advantage of the fact that more and more tourists, both domestic and international, want to visit Phu Quoc. According to the leading global travel website, TripAdvisor, about 39% more Thai tourists expressed their interest in visiting the Vietnamese island in the first six month of 2017 than last year. At the same time, there is a notable growth in interest when it comes to international tourists as well, with 31% more wanting to visit Phu Quoc over the same period than last year.
According to insiders, the Asia’s Boutique Airline primarily wants to target international passengers for this route and aims to use long-haul flights operated by its codeshare partners British Airways, Air France and KLM. In that case, Bangkok Airways would use their connecting flights from Suvarnabhumi.
The Thai-based carrier will be the first to connect Bangkok and Phu Quoc and will join Jetstar Pacific and China Southern in serving Phu Quoc. At the same time, Vietnamese airlines Vietnam Airlines and VietJet also operate daily flights from mainland to the island.
According to official data, more than 1.45 million tourists visited Phu Quoc in 2016. 14% of them were international tourists. As local officials say, new hotels are being built in order to accommodate up to 3 million tourists, which is how much the island expects to see by 2020. The total investment in the island’s tourism sector, which will include a new casino for example, is expected to be worth around US$7 billion or 204.5 billion Vietnamese Dong (VND).
The Vietnamese government also seeks to attract more visitors to the island by offering a 30-day visa waiver for international tourists.
In the meantime, Bangkok Airways continues to expand its fleet and with the addition of the new Airbus A319, the airline now has a total of 37 aircraft.
