Thai Lion Air, the country's newest low-coast carrier, launched its maiden operations on Wednesday with the first flight taking off from Bangkok's Don Mueang International Airport for its less than two hour-flight to Chiang Mai.
Thai Lion Air is the local subsidiary of Indonesia's largest privately-owned airline, Lion Air.
The budget airline makes two return flights daily on the route using the medium-range, narrow-body Boeing B737-900ER (extended range).
Thailand has been a popular tourist destination that attracts millions of visitors from around the world year after year. Thai Lion Air CEO, Capt. Darsito Hendroseputro, is aware of the country's importance in air travel industry and they want to help the country sustain its position as the leading aviation hub in the region.
The low-cost carrier, initially, has two B737-900ER aircraft in its fleet and it is planning to take delivery of another two planes of similar type by February next year.
The additional two aircraft will be utilized to augment frequency on existing routes as well as its route expansion program, like the opening of new routes in the near future. The airline executive emphasized that they will soon launch two new routes, Bangkok-Hat Yai and Bangkok-Singapore, in January or as soon as they take delivery of two additional aircraft.
Thai Lion Air is also planning to launch two more international routes out of Bangkok next year which include Bangkok-Jakarta and Bangkok-Kuala Lumpur.
