Thailand remained as one of the world's most visited countries in 2012 as its six major airports data showed. Air traffic posted a double-digit growth during the period, thanks to the continued influx of foreign visitors to the country and the rapid growth of budget carriers flying to Thailand.
The six airports handled a total of 74.3 million between them or a growth of 11.9% year-on-year over the previous period. Based on preliminary figures published recently by Airports of Thailand, there were a total of 496,749 aircraft movements recorded through these airports or an increase of 10.5%.
According to Somchai Sawasdeepon, AoT acting president, the growth will be sustained this year, adding that the number of passengers will hit a new record of 78 million while aircraft movements will continue to rise hitting the 540,000 mark.
The continued expansion of low-cost carriers, in terms of fleets, will boost the numbers even more. Thai AirAsia, for example, is planning to increase its fleet this year, by acquiring more A320 aircraft.
He further noted that Bangkok's two airports alone, handled a whopping 1.68 million, or a 23% increase over the same period last year. The growth was more than twice the projected increase for the period as predicted just before the holiday season.
Of the total 74.3 million passengers passing through Thailand's six airports, 46 million of whom were international travelers and 28.3 million were domestic passengers. The bulk of the aircraft movements, as expected, were attributed to international flights.
Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport, continued its role as a premier hub of the country handling the bulk of the total passenger traffic or 51.5 million of the total number and the bulk of total aircraft movements or 312,493 out of the total 496,749 movements.
The country's second international gateway, Phuket Airport, handled a total of 9.44 million passengers on 60,457 flights.
