Transforming Thailand into an aviation hub for travel, training and aircraft maintenance is an ambitious proposal envisioned by THAI's Sorajak Kasemsuvan.

Keeping this grand ambition will help the flag carrier more competitive in the regional arena for commercial aviation, he was quoted as saying recently.

The proposal arose from the growing competitiveness of its regional rivals that are eating into its share.

He was very positive about his vision as the country has all what it takes to become an aviation hub, adding that airports around the country can take more expansions for the growing air traffic in the region.

THAI Executive Vice-President for Technical Department, Montree Jumrieng, on the other hand, revealed that the flag carrier is in talks with Airbus to forge a joint venture to put up a corporate training center in the capital, probably within the airline's sprawling compound in Laksi.

The airline is also looking at investing some 30 million baht on modernizing its aviation maintenance work by upgrading its computer systems.

He added that THAI is already training crews from budget carriers and foreign-based airlines. He also boasted that the flag carrier has the capability to train pilots. Its partnership with Airbus in this endeavor will certainly expand their capabilities.

He observes that in recent years many airlines are scrambling to expand their market. THAI is taking the challenge by acquiring newer and bigger aircraft such as the Airbus A380, currently the world's largest airliner. The airline operates three of these super-jumbos and is awaiting delivery for three more this year.

The aircraft, he explained, has proven to be a big factor in attracting customers as it offers unprecedented in-flight comfort especially on long-haul flights which would otherwise be a tedious journey.

Mr. Sorajak is upbeat about the current state of the flag carrier which, he said, is heading to an exciting future ahead with the acquisition of the super-jumbos. He was inviting the public to fly on any of their A380 jets and discover for themselves the ultimate in modern air travel.

In addition to three more super-jumbos, the airline also expects to take delivery of 14 new planes this year. The new upcoming planes will be deployed for its regional network in Asia.

Moreover, it will be adding frequencies to some existing routes across its network, both domestic and international. The official said that the market expansion is geared towards the growing tourism and business travel markets around the world, most especially in the Asia-Pacific region.

Industry leaders estimate that the air passenger traffic will grow by 4.7% annually on average across the globe in the next two decades. They also maintain that Asia-Pacific region will still lead the world in the demand for commercial aircraft acquisition during that period.
