The bus company who got the permit to operate the bus service between Phuket Airport and Patong still doesn't know the exact date as to when they can start the operations.
It was announced earlier that the service will commence operations by July 1, 2013 but unfortunately, the operator has not finalized the details yet including the number of bus stops.
According to Jaturong Keawkasisaid, Phuket Land Transport Office specialist, there is another problem that hinders the start of the operations of the bus service- the transfer of the registration of the fleet from Bangkok to Phuket which has long been delayed.
The company who was granted permit to operate the bus service was hopeful that they will be able to beat the deadline. But with the way things are going at the moment, his proposal of a later date would prove to be manageable, after all.
He admitted that they have already started running promotional ads on a Phuket radio station.
Mr. Panyawai told Phuketwan that he is planning to invite the local dignitaries of Phuket to ride on the first bus on the occasion of its inaugural run. They include the governor of Phuket, the mayor of Patong as well as the director of Phuket International Airport.
According to Khun Jaturong, the fleet to be used in the Phuket-Patong service are the same fleet which was used in Suvarnabhumi Airport. The Phuket-Patong bus service contractor purchased the fleet from the bus service contractor currently serving Suvarnabhumi.
Though the buses are second-hand, they still look good as new and still in excellent condition, he assured.
The number of stops proposed by the bus contractor was nine but Khun Jaturong is fine even if it is less than that number.
The travel time between Patong and the Phuket Airport is estimated to be in the vicinity of one hour and 30 minutes. Fare structure has already been set for five stops from the airport - 60 baht to Thalang, 70 baht to Heroines Monument, 80 baht to Tesco Lotus (Phuket) and 120 baht to Patong terminus.
During the first few runs, passengers will need to purchase tickets in the bus upon boarding.
Though there was a plan to extend the service to Kata-Karon, the contractor has not confirmed yet for such move.
The planned service extension to Kata-Karon has enraged tuktuk and taxi drivers that they threatened to set up barricades on the bus routes if it happens.
