Phuket airport authorities as well as those from other airlines in Thailand have initiated scanning of international flight passengers amid the recent Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS) virus outbreak.
The scanning process is largely targeted on passengers arriving from South Korea, the region where said virus recently surfaced and took nine lives.
Incoming passengers from South Korea (including those from flights with links to the country) as well as passengers from the Middle East are extensively scanned for MERS symptoms before they could go through immigration.
MERS virus monitoring among passengers were initiated by airport officials in Phuket and Bangkok.
Meanwhile, similar safeguards are also being implemented by airports in Singapore particularly in Changi airport.
Monruedee Ketpan, Director of Phuket Airport said that heat-resolution type scanners are used for this purpose.
Phuket airport implemented similar safety measures when Ebola, SARS, and Swine Flu outbreaks hit certain regions in the past.
Reports indicate that the total number of MERS virus cases in South Korea already reached more than a hundred. Additionally, people who were put in isolation already reached 2,800 while a huge number of schools in said country were also ordered closed as added precaution.
