Bangkok Airways' decision to finally take on this new route was borne out of a need to feed growing demand for flight services between two of the most frequently visited cities in Thailand's southern province of Songkhla. People all over Songkhla and adjacent regions have long been waiting for the resumption of air service allowing travel between the two cities in less time.

By land, it takes about six hours to reach Hat Yai from Phuket. Without direct flights from Phuket to Hat Yai, air travelers would have to fly first to Bangkok before they could fly to the southern province. This longer route would cover about a thousand kilometers.

Air travel between Phuket and Hat Yai via Bangkok Airways would take less than an hour at a price of 1,890 baht.

Six years ago, Happy Air used to fly regularly between Phuket, Hat Yai, and Malaysia's Langkawi island but this was cut off as it ceased operations early 2015.

Meanwhile, Nok Air used to fly this route back in 2007 but decided to cancel it due to unsatisfactory load factor.

Following its inaugural flight, Bangkok Airways now flies regularly between the two cities. Using its 70-seater ATR72-500/600, it takes off for Hat Yai at 7:25am. Meanwhile, flights back to Phuket is at 9:10am.

Puttipong Prasarttong-Osoth, head of Bangkok Airways expects to boost tourism in both cities as it tries to link the two on a regular basis.

The airline president stressed that Phuket and Hat Yai are popular among tourists who are taking a vacation or business trip. Phuket is famous for its clubs, beaches, and proximity to Pha Nga Bay that is why throngs of tourists visit the island for fun and adventure. Hat Yai, on the other hand, is more popular as a commercial hub and a convenient take off point for travelers planning a trip to Singapore and Malaysia.

Bangkok Airways also regularly departs from Phuket to bring passengers to Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Samui, or Pattaya. It conducts flights to Bangkok eight times daily.
