Waiting to clear security and check in for your flight is perhaps the least favorite passenger activity of all. At Phuket International Airport, long queues have always been a problem, but tourists will not be able to use the X-Terminal and hopefully board their outbound international flight much quicker.
Monrudee Gettuphan, Director of the Phuket International Airport said:
We are now using the terminal as an extra check-in point to solve long queues for charter flights for the Chinese New Year holidays.
The first group of travellers to benefit from faster check-out was 336 passengers of the Azur Air Flight ZF7732 from Phuket to Moscow, which took off on Tuesday (31st January) at 1:45 pm.
Ms. Monrudee added:
After the passengers had checked-in at X-Terminal, they and their luggage were transferred to the International Terminal by bus. We will continue to do this for a while, especially as more large numbers of Chinese tourists are expected to come to Phuket in February.
Recently, Thai Transport Minister Lt. General Arkhom ordered urgent actions to be taken to reduce the long lines of travellers waiting to be cleared at the airport, so Phuket Airport responded by using the X-Terminal for this purpose.
In addition, General Arkhom also ordered the Airports of Thailand to increase their efforts and have the luggage conveyor x-ray machines up and running at the six international airports it operates.
Gen. Arkhom said:
Having x-ray machines (scan luggage) at the entrance to the International Terminal is causing long passenger queues, as we have seen in the news reports. This is because the conveyor belt x-ray machines inside the airport are being upgraded and will not be available until March 15.
He added:
This is causing some inconvenience to passengers. So, I have ordered all work to be completed this year. I have also asked AoT to look into the possibility of creating another way for passengers access the Immigration area so that travellers will not have to join queues that extend outside the entire Immigration Arrivals Hall.
Arkhom also spoke with Pol. Lt. Gen. Nathathorn Prousoontorn, Chief of Immigration Bureau of Thailand and announced 50 new immigration officers to be posted at Phuket Airport.
