The Tourist and Sports Ministry's proposal intends to revitalise the tourism business now that the COVID-19 situation is improving internationally and in Thailand.
Foreigners from 18 countries who enter Thailand through the visa-on-arrival programme will be able to stay for 30 days instead of 15. People from 50 countries who get a 30-day stamp now through the visa exemption programme will be able to stay for 45 days.
Taweesin said that the CCSA has asked the Ministry of the Interior, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Immigration Bureau, and other relevant agencies to change their procedures so that they are in line with the extension.
The Tourism and Sports Minister, Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, stated earlier this month that around 1.07 million international visitors entered Thailand in July, the first time that monthly visits had topped 1 million since the outbreak of the epidemic.
Phiphat anticipates around 1 million foreign arrivals per month in August and September, and 1.5 million per month from October through December. The minister is sure that there will be close to 10 million tourists from other countries in 2022.
Taweesin said that the government intends to declare COVID-19 endemic in October, following the dissolution of CCSA.
According to him, the decision to label the disease as endemic was based on the comparatively modest number of newly confirmed cases and fatalities.
