According to Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) governor Yuthasak Supasorn, the COVID-19 problem for Thai tourism is now resolved, with 1.4 million foreign tourists this year and abroad tour agents selling Thailand's destinations once again.

He said that if the budget for promoting tourism was bigger, the TAT's goal of getting at least 7 million international visitors this year could be raised to 10 million.

Therefore, the TAT would submit a budget request to the Economic Situation Administration Centre of the Thai government for around 100 million baht.

In the budget, promoting flights from Asia, Europe, and Australia to Thailand from Asia, Europe, and Australia would be a top priority.

This year, it is anticipated that earnings from Thai and foreign tourists will total 1.5 trillion baht. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) thinks that this number will go up to 2.4 trillion baht (equal to 80% of tourism earnings before Covid) the following year, when there will be about 20 million international tourists.

In 2024, tourism earnings are anticipated to surpass the pre-Covid level of 3 trillion baht, with 25-30 million international tourists.

"It is apparent that the tourism industry has emerged from the COVID-19 crisis," Yuthasak said. "There are clear indications that Thailand's tourism industry has recovered."

More than 1.4 million foreign tourists entered Thailand between January 1 and June 6, up from 440,000 the previous year.

In relation to the 276 tour operators from 45 countries who participated in Thailand Travel Mart Plus 2022, held in Phuket, the TAT's governor stated: "This is the first time in two years that international travel agencies are selling Thailand again."

Since the Test & Go entrance procedure was discontinued on May 1, daily tourist arrivals have increased to over 30,000. The TAT has increased its May-September monthly arrival target from 300,000 to 500,000.

During the peak season from October through December, this number is predicted to increase to 1 million every month.

Yuthasak stated that despite the number of tourists being significantly fewer than pre-Covid levels, the average amount spent per trip by tourists has climbed from 47,000 to 75,000 baht.

The Public Health Ministry of Thailand revealed on Sunday (12 June) that 2,474 new patients had tested positive for COVID-19 in the past 24 hours.

The death toll rose by twenty, while 4,236 people were healed and discharged from hospitals.

Since January 1, 2022, cumulative cases in the country have reached 2,261,428.

There are currently 4,484,863 COVID-19 cases in the country, of which 4,432,199 have recovered, 22,330 are still hospitalised, and 30,334 have died.

On Sunday, Worldometer reported that the number of confirmed cases had climbed to 540,24 million, of which 515,40 million have recovered, 18.50 million are active cases (36,227 in serious condition); and 6.33 million have died.

The United States has the highest cases with 87.30 million, followed by India with 43.22 million, Brazil with 31.44 million, France with 29.77 million, and Germany with 26.84 million.
