Six biggest airports in Thailand, six of them operated by Airports of Thailand (AoT) have handled more than twice passengers in Financial Year (FY) 2015 then they did in FY 2009, claims AoT. AoT airports handled nearly 107 million passengers in FY2015, while this year (up to August), AoT airports already handled more than 110 million passengers and the trend suggests the figure will reach or even exceed 120 million by the end of the full financial year.
AoT operates the following airports: Don Muang and Suvarnabhumi in Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and Hat Yai.
According to Airports of Thailand, AoT-operated airports handled 86 per cent of inbound and outbound passenger traffic in all Thai airports as well as 81 per cent of all aircraft movement.
When it comes to non-AoT airports, the busiest one was Krabi, which handled 3.69 million passengers in 2015. This airport was followed by Udon Thani (2.21 million passengers in 2015) and Bangkok Airways-operated Koh Samui (2.05 million passengers in 2015). Bangkok Airways also operates Trat and Sukhothai airports.
Thailand has a total of 38 airports.
Meanwhile, Airports of Thailand has stepped up security measures and procedures at all six airports it manages, said the president of this organization Mr. Nitinai Sirismatthakarn.
Mr. Nitinai urged passengers to cooperate with the security personnel by complying with security measures imposed at these airports.
AoT did this after the police chief Chakthip Chaijinda instructed all state agencies to be alert for possible bombing and sabotage acts of popular tourist attractions and symbolic government buildings.
The measures AoT added include information collation, situation assessment, security checks of passenger luggage and belongings, security patrols in and around the airports, 24h surveillance by CCT (closed circuit television) cameras, random scans to detect explosives and strict inspection of vehicles and individuals.
AoT will also coordinate their actions with the National Security Council.
In case anyone sees any suspicious objects, individuals or movements, they can relay this information to the AoT contact centre at 1722.
