Thai Smile will introduce four weekly flights between Bangkok and Luang Prabang in Laos as of 16th January next year. The carrier will over the route from Thai Airways International (THAI) to fly Airbus A320 aircraft every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday to one of the most popular tourist destinations in Southeast Asia.
To kick-start the route, the carrier is offering a one-way promotional fare at 3,495 baht, inclusive off all fees and taxes. You can book the fare from today until 24th March next year and it will be valid for the travel period between the official start of the route on 16th January, 2017 until 24th March same year.
As evident from the number of carriers interested in flying to it, Luang Prabang’s popularity is growing when it comes to tourist arrivals. Thai AirAsia was the first low-cost carrier to receive the go-ahead from authorities to launch flights from Thailand to Luang Prabang and the airline was soon followed by AirAsia, which launched direct flights between Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and Luang Prabang on 21st November, Singapore’s SilkAir (flies to both Luang Prabang and Vientiane) and regional carrier Bangkok Airways.
Thai AirAsia offers exclusive one-way fares to Luang Prabang from 2,995 baht, while Bangkok Airways offers the service at 3,920 baht.
Thanks to the growing popularity, Luang Prabang tourism officials believe they will see 700,000 foreign visitors per year by 2018. In 2016, Luang Prabang should welcome 600,000 international visitors, or 100,000 more than the year before.
Whether the town will actually reach those numbers remains to be seen, but it definitely has the necessary accommodations for tourists, with 76 hotels, 286 international and traditional restaurants and 327 guesthouses, while travel is made easier by 75 tourism companies operating out of Luang Prabang.
The city is recognized as a World Heritage site since 1995 and, according to a survey Laos Tourism Development Department conducted last year, around 83% of international tourists, out of 2,800 participants, who visit the country put the town at the very top of their most-visit destinations.
