10th May 2017
In a ceremony held on Monday, 8th May, 2017 at Suvarnabhumi Room A, at the Novotel Suvarnabhumi Hotel, Thai Airways International (THAI) received the new Air Operator Certificate (AOC), as well as the Dangerous Goods Certificate. The two certificates were presented to THAI Acting President Mrs. Usanee Sangsingkeo by Mr. Arkhom Termpittayapaisith, Director of the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT).
THAI thus became the first and at the moment sole Thai-based carrier to be granted both the Air Operator Certificate and the Dangerous Goods Certificate. Bangkok Airways is the only other Thai airline to receive the AOC.
Upon receiving the certificates, Mrs. Usanee Sangsingkeo said that her company is proud to have had its role in problem solving after the Universal Safety Oversight Audit Program (USOAP) audit of Thai-registered civil aviation operators. Thai carriers have to go through this audit and gain the Air Operator Certificates after the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) red flagged Thai civil aviation for a number of safety oversights.
Mrs. Usanee also thanked the Director of the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand on CAAT’s support and help in obtaining the certificates.
This year, THAI embarked on a Safety Beyond Compliance Program, with the goal of improving its safety standards. This included completely new training programs, which are now more attuned with the international standards and what the ICAO in its audit is looking for.
The new THAI safety standards led to the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) allowing the airline to recommence flying to Europe as a Third Country Operator (TCO).
The Dangerous Goods Certificate allows Thai Airways to carry not only passengers, but also agricultural products, fresh food and other safety control items.
The AOC and the DGC are both proof of Thailand’s strategy of becoming a regional aviation and logistics hub, as well as THAIs intent of maintaining top standards for passenger comfort and safety.
Finally, Mrs. Usanee expressed that THAI is ready to be a part of the cooperative effort in building a strong aviation business in Thailand that will be accepted globally.
