Following the implementation of a new jet-fuel tax which will drive up costs for airlines, Thai Airways International (THAI) has decided to raise its domestic airfares. While this move will certainly be unpopular with passengers, one can’t really blame the airline for doing this.

On Tuesday, the airline’s President Charamporn Jotikasthira said about this:

The new tax definitely reflects operating costs, same as other airlines. THAI is considering increasing domestic airfares. Our commercial department is monitoring and working on that.

The extra airfares charges will be based on passenger volume and flight distance. However, the Thailand-based airline will most likely make them close to those some other airlines have already announced.

Apart from THAI, several other low-cost carriers, including Thai AirAsia and Nok Air have also announced that they will include extra fuel surcharge of 150 baht from now on. Apart from them, Bangkok Airways will also increase its domestic airfares. The Asia’s Boutique Airline has announced that it will raise its domestic fares by 200 baht from 8th February, 2017 (Wednesday).

THAI Appoints New Airline President

This will likely be the last call made by Mr. Charamporn as Thai Airways’ president as he has announced his departure from the company on 10th February (Friday).  Charamporn has served THAI as president for two years and two months.

He will be replaced by Usanee Sangsingkeo as active president, the Thai Airways International Plc. board had decided yesterday. Mr. Usanee is currently the executive vice president at THAI and is in charge of its aviation business unit.

Mr. Usanee will only temporarily act as president for Thai Airways, at least until a new president is selected. Right now, the board has nine names to choose from. So far, there are no indications as to who these candidates could be and whether they come from the company or are outside candidates.

Mr. Charamporn is said to be leaving the company after realizing his initial rehabilitation plan will be set back six months.

In the past six months, THAI has increased its online bookings by 22% of total bookings this month from 21% in the same period last year. The company believes it can go up to 23% by April. In addition, seat capacity and passenger loads have also increased.
