Thai AirAsia Chief Executive Officer Tassapon Bijleveld today explained his strategy that he said will help TAA grow up to 25% in 2017. His strategy relies mainly on expanding the network into India and the CLMV region (Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam) and increasing flight frequencies there.
Mr Tassapon also said that the biggest low-cost carrier in Thailand is looking to carry 19.5 million travelers this year, or 2.5 million more from the projected 17 million in 2016. The fact that it will acquire six new Airbus A320 planes this year will certainly help this matter.
TAA CEO said:
The year 2016 was all about creating an extensive network and bolstering capacity by adding a variety of hubs and launching a record 12 domestic and international routes. For 2017, we will be focusing on strengthening our presence in India and CLMV, which offer great potential.
TAA flies to Kochi, Chennai, Bengaluru and Kolkata from Bangkok.
Speaking about the demand from India, Mr Tassapon said:
We foresee a lot of potential and demand from India whose traffic will support TAA's growth and be a good back up when inbound Chinese tourist numbers become modest.
He also added that both domestic and international tourism will greatly benefit from the country’s political stability.
There still remains the problem with reduced Chinese tourists. Since the Thai government went down hard on the zero-dollar tours, there were considerably less tourists coming from China to Thailand in the last quarter of 2016.
Mr Tassapon remained calm about this issue, saying:
This is not a big problem for AirAsia because we have been through many tough times and we beat them with our improved service. AirAsia is a resilient organisation and we are very adaptive to any kind of situation. To make up for the slowdown, we will focus more on FITs (free independent travellers.
Finally, Thai AirAsia is also looking to introduce new routes and increase frequencies on its more popular routes. The airline’s CEO also said they intend to offer more flights from hubs other than Bangkok.
Right now TAA operates most of its flights from Don Muang International Airport in the Thailand’s capital.
