Thanks to the popularity of LCCs and some robust tourism, air traffic through major Thai airport boomed between January and March with an increase of 13.73 per cent in that period, which means airports recorded more than 32 million passengers travel through.
A big chunk of that passenger traffic (41.73 per cent) is thanks to low cost carriers, which carried 13.49 million passengers. This is an increase of 20.06 per cent.
In addition, the six biggest airports in Thailand also saw a 9.47 per cent growth in aircraft take-offs and landings, up to a total of 197,913. 82,972 of that number went through low cost carriers, 8.14 per cent more than during the same period of 2015.
Four airports operated by Airports of Thailand (AoT) recorded double digit growth in traffic for both domestic and international passengers.
Don Muang in Bangkok had the highest growth rate in the first quarter of the year, with a 23.12 increase, handling 8.85 million passengers. Behind it was Thailand’s largest airport, Suvarnabhumi, which saw 15.27 million passengers go through it, 8.03 per cent more than last year.
Thailand’s third-busiest airport Phuket increased its passenger number by 18.72 per cent or a total of 4.26 million. Following was Chiang Mai, which recorded a total of 2.48 million passengers in Q1 2016 after an increase of 14.46 per cent.
Chiang Rai crossed the half million threshold after an increase of 18.77 per cent and reached 516.859 passengers between January and March, while Hat Yai showed the slowest growth of 3.49 per cent, up to 925.748 passengers for this period.
Low cost carriers also contributed to the increase in passenger traffic for major AoT-operated airports.
Here too, Don Muang Airport had the biggest increase of any Thai airport. Don Muang passenger numbers soared 20.95 per cent for LCCs, up to 8.08 million. Phuket saw 1.51 million LCC passengers, thanks to an increase of 24.99 per cent, while Chiang Mai handled 1.50 million passengers carried by a low cost carrier, 13.97 per cent more than last year.
Suvarnabhumi handled 1.25 million LCC passengers, 27.13 per cent up from the same period in 2015, while 376.129 LCC passengers went through Chiang Rai, an increase of 28.05 per cent.
Once again, Hat Yai Airport trailed behind everyone else, with an increase of “only” 2.21 per cent or 759.575 passengers.
