Executives of Thai Airways International (THAI) will meet later this month with the representatives of its two affiliates Thai Smile and Nok Air to discuss the future of their joint management plan.
Acting president at THAI, Usanee Sangsingkeo said that the State Enterprise Policy was satisfied with the airline’s reform plan to cut overheads. She also said the company’s expenses dropped in line with the target in January and February of 2017. However, as THAI’s revenue fell short of target, the commission on Wednesday urged the carrier to come up with a better plan to increase its revenue.
Usanee said:
Thai needs to quickly draw up a plan to increase revenue to present at the next committee meeting.
THAI’s Executive Vice President for Corporate Strategy and Sustainable Development Montree Jumrieng said that the cooperation between the three airlines would among other things include flight routes and sharing resources such as aircraft maintenance, ground services, marketing and parking bays.
He also said that this would aid with the management of operational costs.
One of the problems THAI’s affiliate carrier, Nok Air is facing is high operation costs. This was confirmed by one of its board members Narongchai Wongthanavimok who admitted the budget airline is struggling because of it.
To deal with this, the carrier, which is 39% owned by Thai Airways, will hire a consultancy agency to help it with its reform plan. The plan, according to Mr. Narongchai should be finalized in the next three months. Narongchai is also a member of the Nok Air’s committee for strategy and long-term aviation planning.
The joint management plan sees Nok Air focusing on short-haul domestic flights, while the other affiliate Thai Smile will take over domestic passengers and those flying in Indochina. Each airline is required to deliver transiting passengers to the other two as well.
Montree said:
In the future, the three airlines would form an aviation network.
When finalized, the cooperation would allow Thai Airways, Thai Smile and Nok Air to compete more efficiently in the aviation industry and on the market, be it domestic, regional or international.
