Passengers at Phuket Airport can once again use the full services at the Domestic Terminal here since last night. The areas in Phase 1 of the airport’s renovation are now re-opened for public.
The Phuket Airport renovation is a B5.14 billion Thai baht project to expand the busiest airport in the country outside of Bangkok. The expansion started on 1st November 2016 and was initially planned to take 330 days. However, the Airports of Thailand (AoT) soon announced that the project would take a total of 406 days and that it would be finished in two phases.
Phase 1 would take 256 days and would close Levels 1, 2 and 3 on the south side of the Domestic Terminal for renovations, while Phase 2 would take 150 days to complete and would close Levels 1, 2 and 3 on the north side to improve airport systems.
During a tour of the renovated terminal for the press last Thursday, Phuket Airport General Manager Petch Chancharoen said that full services here would commence at 6:00 AM today.
The first flight to depart from the airport was Thai AirAsia Flight DD3042 at 5:37 AM. That aircraft reached Don Muang International Airport at 7:01 AM.
Mr Petch said to the media:
Phase 1 will be concluded by the time the first flights from Bangkok Airways and Thai AirAsia arrive at approximately 6am on Nov 28, and then Phase 2, in the north of the airport, will begin renovation, which is expected to be complete by June 2018. The new domestic passenger terminal will accommodate both inbound and outbound passengers, and passengers will be comfortable with the space of the new check-in hall which now has 22 check-in counters.
He added:
There is also to be an expanded hallway to accommodate increased passenger traffic, and new public utilities in the passenger terminals. Outbound passengers can check-in on the second floor and arrivals can be welcomed on the first floor. Car parking for personal vehicles is available at the front the domestic passenger terminal, or, at the five-storey car park building which will connect to the domestic terminal with a walkway.
