Yesterday, the CAAT said that director Sutthiphong Kongpool had signed off on rules that allow Thai domestic flights to start giving food and drinks to passengers again, starting right away, as long as they follow strict COVID-19 prevention procedures.

The measures include serving food and beverages in prepackaged containers and bottles, respectively. The CAAT states that cabin workers must wash their hands frequently and clean with disinfectant, especially before meals are served.

As a COVID preventive strategy, the CAAT prohibited airlines from providing food and beverages on domestic flights beginning in December 2020. In September 2020, Thai Airways turned its Bangkok headquarters into an airline-themed restaurant where people who missed the taste of airline food could eat.

The COVID related issues posed by in-flight meals have less to do with the food itself and more to do with the usage of face masks. As a way to protect against the coronavirus, all passengers on crowded planes are required to wear a face mask for the whole flight.

Masks must be removed before eating or drinking. This is important on long-distance flights, but most local flights in Thailand are only 1–2 hours long, so you might not need to eat, and changing face masks might help COVID spread.

The CAAT did not explain why they opted to withdraw the food and drink prohibition at this time, although it does not appear to be connected to the number of coronavirus cases. Because COVID variants BA.4 and BA.5 are easy to spread and more people are going abroad, the number of cases in Thailand stays high.

Since the Thailand Pass was taken away on July 1, tourists are coming back to Thailand. Many of them fly from Bangkok to other cities in Thailand.

Snacks and beverages are included in the purchase of a Thai Airways or Bangkok Air flight ticket. However, cheap airlines like Nok Air, Thai VietJet, Lion Air, and Thai AirAsia rely heavily on the sale of in-flight food and beverages.
