The Civil Aviation Administration of China has suggested quintupling the number of flights between China and Thailand, which may soon result in an increase in Chinese tourism to Thailand. There are currently three flights a week between Thailand and China, but the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand said it got a letter from the CAAC asking for there to be fifteen flights a week instead.
China has historically been a major source of visitors to Thailand, despite COVID-19 restrictions and limited foreign travel options. Thus, the possibility of expanded flights could be a huge boon to a struggling tourist industry. The CAAT said that most of these requested flights are for business or other necessary travel, and that China's strict COVID rules are still in place.
In response to the Chinese CAAT's request for additional flights into Thailand, the Thai government has been asked to boost the number of aircraft departing the kingdom for China. While they have limited capacity at some of the big airports, like Shanghai, Beijing, and Guangzhou, they have requested authorities for a list of Thai-based airlines and routes they may be interested in operating. The Chinese airports will then confirm whether or not they can accept flights from Thailand.
The concept will be explored with all Thai-based airlines, and the CAAT will develop a list to send to China within the following week. The flights would then be expedited, and if Chinese airports can accept them, they might begin as early as September.
Even though most of the new flights between Thailand and China will at first be for travel deemed to be essential, they will lay the groundwork for when China lifts its strict pandemic restrictions and tourism can resume, which is something the Thai tourism industry has been looking forward to.
