In preparation for the next year’s ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF 2018) the Thailand’s Northern gateway city Chiang Mai will increase the number of direct international flights. Announcing the decision, Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Governor Mr. Yuthasak Supasorn said:

The increase in international direct flights will support the ATF 2018 theme of ‘ASEAN – Sustainable Connectivity, Boundless Prosperity’. Delegates or tourists can enjoy their time in this northern city, and then continue their journey to other parts of Thailand or within ASEAN via the many intra-regional and international connecting flights available. While flights are currently keeping up with demand there is also available capacity to handle future growth as we expect hosting ATF 2018 will also result in more travellers wanting to visit Chiang Mai.

He also added that TAT has hosted a number of multi-country ASEAN familiarization trips, which had a purpose to connect the monarchy and important ASEAN commercial hubs, in an effort to promote the tourism industry in the ASEAN region.

Almost half of international flights (3,436 out of 7,614 direct flights) to Chiang Mai came from China. Leading cities are Beijing and Shanghai with 1,022 direct flights each, followed by Guangzhou with 664, Kunming with 450 flights and Hangzhou with 365 flights. The other destinations in China that connect with Chiang Mai include Chengdu, Chongqing, Haikou, Nanjing, Qingdao, Nanning, Shenzhen, Wuhan and Xi’an.

Apart from China, Chiang Mai also saw 1,088 flights from Hong Kong, 880 from Myanmar, 837 from Kuala Lumpur, 489 from Singapore, 365 from Macau and 242 direct international flights from Seoul this year so far.

Domestically, Chiang Mai is linked with the other major cities in Thailand, including Bangkok, to where several local airlines operate, including Thai Airways International (THAI) Bangkok Airways, Thai AirAsia, Thai Lion Air, Thai Smile, Nok Air and others.

Chiang Mai is also connected with several other Thai cities, including Chiang Rai, Phuket, Hat Yai, Pattaya, Hua Hin and Surat Thani, but also some secondary destinations in the country such as Mae Sot, Mae Hong Son, Udon Thani, Khon Kaen, Ubon Ratchathani and Phitsanulok.
