The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has named two areas in Thailand as “Creative Cities.”

UNESCO on October 30 said that it included Bangkok and Sukhothai in its 66 creative cities, bringing Thailand’s UNESCO Creative Cities to four.

In 2015, Phuket has been named a “Creative City for Gastronomy” while Chiang Mai was tagged as a “Creative City of Crafts and Folk Art.”

Bangkok primarily was dubbed as “Creative City of Design” while Sukhothai was named “Creative City of Crafts and Folk Art.”

UNESCO said that the member cities have different income levels and population, and belong to all continents of the world. Being the forefront of ideas and innovative practices, the UNESCO Creative Cities bring a tangible contribution to achieving Sustainable Development Goals through innovative thinking and action.

Through their commitment, member cities are championing sustainable development actions which benefit directly the community.

“All over the world, these cities, each in its way, make culture the pillar, not an accessory, of their strategy,” UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay said.

“This favors political and social innovation and is particularly important for the younger generations,” she added.

The UNESCO Creative Cities now totals to 246 cities.
