In the past five years, the number of passengers that have gone through the Phuket Airport have nearly doubled and one of the most popular holiday destinations for Thais and Asians as a whole has witnessed a surge in air travel says consulting group C9 Hotelworks.
The Thailand-based consultant company released data, showing that, year-on-year, international travel increased by 8 per cent when it comes to the number of passengers. The situation is even better for domestic travel, where the surge was 15 per cent.
A key factor in this is that, compared to the same period of last year and the year previous, the number of passengers between Thailand and mainland China rose an amazing 34 per cent. That’s despite China’s current economic problems and the thought that this would impact travel and tourism.
Managing director of C9 Bill Barnett said:
Location, location, location – the China syndrome has so much to do with door-to-door travel time fuelled by a rising number of low-cost airlines. Another key factor is the cultural connection and high esteem for Brand Thailand on the Mainland.
Barnett also said:
A rise in OTA’s wholesalers and shorter booking periods of less than 30 days is seeing hotels push the over-react button on rates and in many cases short selling their product. It’s a shifting market that has confused the traditional hotel yield mechanism and much of the demise in rates aside from a major change in geographic segments is panic selling.
In the future, the sky above Phuket and Thailand should become even busier starting June, when the new Phuket International Airport terminal opens.
Turkish ambassador in Thailand, Osman Bulent Tulun, however, didn’t have much nice to say about Phuket Airport upon his arrival there.
In a meeting with Prajiad Aksornthammakul, Vice Governor of Phuket, the ambassador said:
Phuket is a beautiful place and many Turkish people want to travel to the island. However, they always complain about three aspects of their trip: the narrow airport terminal communication issues with airport employees and immigration.
The issue, Phuket’s Vice Governor notes, should be resolved with the new terminal:
We have just had the soft opening of our new airport terminal for international flights. We are pleased to welcome direct flight from Turkey to Phuket and believe that the new terminal will help resolve some of the issues.
About 20,000 Turks visit Phuket each year.
