Airport Authority of Thailand (AOT) President Nitinai Sirismatthakarn and King Power Chief Executive Officer Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha both publicly dismissed corruption claims stated in a lawsuit against AOT regarding its duty free concession at Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok.

According to the lawsuit, Thai government and AOT agreed to reduce a concession fee percentage payable at the pick-up counters at the airport from 15% to just 3% and that way “defrauded” in King Power’s benefit.

However, the AOT president claims that this percentage revision has actually benefited the state, rather than serving as a detriment. He called the lawsuit “absolutely groundless” and also pointed out that the duty free concession and pick-up counters are not even directly connected in a contractual way.

At the same time, Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha, King Power CEO, issued a statement in which he also rejected the corruption claims. He said:

The allegations in question are categorically denied. King Power has always followed and been absolutely committed to the highest standards in proper and ethical business practice. We are proud of our company’s good name and honest reputation and will fight rigorously any attempts to discredit them.

The lawsuit against AOT was filed by the deputy chairman of the anti-corruption sub-committee of the National Reform Steering Assembly and former government opposition MP Charnchai Issarasenarak. His allegations were first published in the British Guardian and Singaporean Straits Times.

The lawsuit was filed against 18 AOT executives and officials, who allegedly caused damages of up to 14 billion baht. Mr Charnchai said:

The state officials worked in favour of the private company which subsequently led to a substantial loss in state revenue. I want this case to serve as an example.

The plaintiff named 83 witnesses to give testimony in this case. One of them is Thailand’s Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, for whom Mr. Charnchai said that he decided to call to the witness stand after consulting with the chairman of the anti-corruption sub-committee of NRSA Admiral Phajun Tamratheep.

The court will decide whether it will accept the lawsuit or not on 25th July.
