New full body scanners will be installed on six biggest airports in Thailand by the Airports of Thailand. AoT will replace the walk-through metal detectors at Suvarnabhumi, Don Muang, Phuket, Hat Yai, Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai airports to upgrade the security there.

AoT will install a total of 32 body scanners, including 20 at Suvarnabhumi, four at Phuket, three at Don Muang, two in Chiang Mai and Hat Yai each and one in Chiang Rai.

The new body scanners will be able to sport metal and non-metallic objects, including weapons and explosives hidden under the person’s clothes.

In addition, AoT will also replace the X-ray machines with more modern detection devices, aka Advanced Technology X-ray, capable of better detecting hidden explosives.

AoT Plans to Increase Capacity on Airports to 190 Million over the Next Five Years

The developments and upgrades at all six airports will cost the Airports of Thailand about 194 billion baht, said AoT President Nitinai Sirismatthakarn.

Mr Nitinai also said that AoT plans to increase the capacity on all six airports from the current 83.5 million passengers per year to 190 million a year over the course of next five years.

This includes increasing the non-aviation to aviation revenue from 40:60 to 50:50 by 2020 at Suvarnabhumi as well as doubling the commercial areas at Phuket to generate up to 50 per cent more revenue.

AoT has approved a master plan worth 162 billion baht for the development of Suvarnabhumi, Don Muang and Chiang Mai airports and 32 billion baht for the development of Chiang Rai, Phuket and Hat Yai Airports.

The biggest chunk of this budget, 117 billion baht, will go for the development of Suvarnabhumi. The airport should increase its passenger capacity to 90 million per year (from 45 million now) by 2021.

31.8 billion baht is planned for the development of Don Muang International Airport. By the end of it (2022), the airport should be able to accept 40 million passengers per year.

Chiang Mai development should cost 12.7 billion baht and will be finished by 2030. By the end of it, the airport should handle 20 million passengers per year.

12 million has been allotted for the development of Phuket Airport. Once finished, by 2022, the airport should accommodate 18 million passengers per year.

The development of Hat Yai will be financed with 15 billion baht and should be completed by 2030 and another five billion will go for the development of Chiang Rai. The development of that airport is planned to be complete by 2022, after which Chiang Rai will be able to accommodate up to three million travelers per year.
