In response to the government's request for lower airfares, the Airlines Association of Thailand (AAT) has agreed to start promotional programmes that would start in January and give domestic air price savings of up to 20%.
According to knowledgeable airline sources, the seven founding members of the AAT recently met to discuss lowering air fares to increase air travel while boosting regional tourism.
The Thai Finance Ministry has decided to lower the excise tax on aviation fuel to assist cover some of the operating expenses of domestic airlines.
Businesses in Phuket reportedly requested more flights from domestic carriers over the holiday season to accommodate an increase in travellers. Additionally, they requested that the government pressure the airlines to lower their allegedly exorbitantly expensive rates.
Bangkok Airways, Thai Air Asia, Thai Air Asia X, Thai Smile Airways, Nok Air, Thai Lion Air, and Thai Vietjet founded the AAT at the beginning of this year.
