According to the Bangkok Post, the Transport Ministry has completed a plan to have the Airports of Thailand Plc (AoT) to run the U-Tapao Airport. The airfield on the Eastern Seaboard, serving Pattaya is currently run operated by the navy.
The plan has caused some controversy as it is being questioned whether or not the Transport Ministry should be making as the airport is currently under the jurisdiction of the Defense Ministry.
The Transport Ministry believe that with the experience and resources of AoT the airport would improve operations and increase traffic there.
Currently the airport serves Pattaya, Chon Buri and Rayong. There are 2 scheduled Bangkok Airways flights (to and from Phuket and Koh Ssamui) and in high season some chartered flights from Russia.
The Navy are currently preparing for a 1,000,000 (1 million) Baht airport upgrade which would make it more capable in future emergency situations if Suvarnabhumi and Don Muang become unavailable. These plans are due to completed by the end of 2013.
