Thailand's Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) has announced plans to expand Trang Airport in Amphoe Mueang Trang, Thailand.

According to Thaworn Saengamphai, the airport's GM, the number of flyers using the airport has grown over the years triggering the need to expand soon.

Improvements will include construction of a new terminal. Total cost of construction will reach around 720 million baht.

Start of construction work has been set on 2017 and is expected to be finished within two years.

Meanwhile, surveying, planning, and design will commence next year.

Another airport apron where aircraft parking, refueling, boarding, and loading/unloading takes place will also be built.

Thaworn mentioned that Trang's airport terminal has accommodated more than 500,000 passengers in 2014 - a far cry from a mere 100,000 back in 2007. By next year, the volume is expected to reach beyond the 600,000 mark.

This forecast necessitates construction of a new airport terminal in Trang.

Major Thai airlines like Nok Air and Thai AirAsia conduct regular flights to Trang. By June, another airline, Thai Lion Air will be including Trang in its roster of flight destinations.

Aside from the locals in Trang, the airport also services those residing or visiting nearby provinces including Phatthalung as well as those frequenting the Andaman coast, west of Thailand.
