Year-to-date passenger traffic at the Suvarnabhumi airport reached an all-time high of 52.4 million as of September, registering a 13% growth over the same period last year.

The figure, which is based on official records dated October 14, equates to a healthier tourism sector in Thailand and to some extent, in the whole world as well.

International passenger traffic posted impressive growth rate of 15.5% as it climbed to a level close to 44 million.

Meanwhile, domestic passenger traffic posted modest growth reaching 8.43 million, a less than 1% increase. Shifting domestic traffic from Suvarnabhumi to Don Mueang was partly to blame as the latter has been accommodating more and more budget carriers than usual.

While Suvarnabhumi airport's high traffic is certainly a reflection of a healthy travel sector, this has caused unwanted overcrowding at the airport premises. The facility is designed to accommodate up to 45 million passengers per year, and the actual 52.4 million level is way too much.

Aircraft movements also went up by around 6%, reaching 310,867.

Local aircraft movements rose by more than 3% while growth rate for the international sector registered at around 7%.

Freight movement within Suvarnabhumi airport also posted positive growth but not as impressive as those for passenger traffic. A slack in economic activity is one of the culprits.

The airport commenced operations in 2006 and since then, it has accommodated over 400 million domestic and international passengers.

Suvarnabhumi airport aims to be recognised as Asia-Pacific's international gateway for both passengers and cargoes.
