Airports of Thailand, which operate six busiest airports in the country, have revealed that Don Mueang, Phuket, Suvarnabhumi, Hat Yai, Chian Mai and Chiang Rai airports have had 21.3 per cent more passengers going through them in 2015 than they did in the year prior.
The AoT said this is a new record of just below 110 million passengers between these airports.
According to AoT, take offs and landings increased together by 16.6 per cent up from 2014, a trend that should continue in the year ahead, with an additional projected 11 per cent increase in passenger traffic.
This likely wouldn't be possible if not for the expansions at Don Mueang and Phuket airports.
Following the completion of terminal 2 at Don Mueang, this airport should be able to process as much as 30 million passengers per year. The current capacity of the airport is 18.5 million a year.
In addition, Don Mueang Airport also saw a growth in passenger air traffic in the region and not just in Thailand. Last year, traffic at Don Mueang was 30.3 million (up 40.7 per cent from year before). Of that number, 21.1 million (35.9 per cent more than 2014) were domestic passengers and 9.17 million (53.1 per cent higher than 2014) were passengers on international routes.
The long-awaited expansion of Phuket Airport should, costing as much as 5 billion baht and which includes a new passenger terminal, should also be completed soon. This will enable the airport to welcome 12.5 passengers per year instead of the current 6.5 million, a figure which it has long surpassed.
In 2015, Phuket Airport handled 12.9 million passengers. This was 12.8 per cent higher than in 2014. This includes 6.95 million international and 5.90 million domestic passengers and an increase of 8.27 and 18.6 per cent since 2014 for international and domestic passengers respectively.
The biggest international airport in Thailand, Suvarnabhumi also had a big share of passenger traffic in 2015 with a total of 52.9 million travelers going through it in 2015, including 44.2 million international passengers (up 15.9 per cent from 2014) and 8.68 million domestic passengers (an increase of 4.87 per cent from last year).
Three other big airports in Thailand - Hat Yai, Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai - have also witnessed an increase in passenger traffic in 2015.
