Thai Lion Air has announced recently the launch of four feeder services originating from its new hub in Hat Yai, a bustling metropolitan center in southern Thailand.
This despite the uncertainty brought about by the country's political unrest that has engulfed Thailand since October of last year.
The simultaneous launch of four routes was set to begin in March 21 this year. These routes include Surat Thani and Hua Hin both in Thailand, Medan in Indonesia and Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia.
Thai Lion Air is part of the large Lion Air group based in Indonesia which also has similar ventures in Malaysia, called Malindo Air, a full-service carrier. Lion Air is the largest privately-owned airline operator in Indonesia.
The new routes will serve as feeder routes and will be serviced by ATR72-600 turboprops that the airline has acquired recently.
The airline will initially serve the Hat Yai-Hua Hin route with five flights per week; Hat Yai-Subang route with 4 flights a week, Hat Yai-Surat and Hat Yai-Medan routes with three flights a week each.
The airline officials said that the new feeder routes are on a trial bases and would stay if demand is sustained even the political turmoil in Bangkok is over.
The decision to open feeder routes from its hub in Hat Yai came only last month in line with the airline's expansion program.
Despite the dampened tourism industry in the country due to the ongoing political unrest, the budget carrier is planning to acquire more narrow-body jets, specifically B737 aircraft, to increase its current fleet of 4, three of which are all B737-900ER. It has placed firm orders of nine more of the B737-900ER.
The recently-acquired third B737-900ER jet will be deployed on the Bangkok-Chiang Mai route by March 14 this year. It will support the Bangkok-Hat Yai service which will commence soon.
With the narrow-body jet servicing the route, the Bangkok-Chiang Mai flights will get a boost by almost half the frequency it currently has to five times weekly. The soon-to-start Bangkok-Hat Yai route will get a thrice-weekly service upon its commencement on March 21.
