Thailand's state-owned flag carrier will be finally joining other major airlines around the world offering Wi-Fi service on board its flights.
Thai Airways applied for a license from the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) in August last year to permit them to offer in-flight Wi-Fi service to its customers.
The regulatory body has finally approved its application early this month enabling them to start offering the service anytime. The flag carrier effectively becomes the first carrier from Thailand to offer wireless internet on board its flights.
The service will debut on February aboard Thai Airways' fleet of A380 and A330 planes which ply the long-haul and regional routes.
While some airlines offer their in-flight wireless internet service for free, Thai Airways' own Wi-Fi service offering, though, has a price tag for its usage. And it is not cheap, mind you.
If you want to avail of a wireless internet connection to while your time away on a long-haul flight, you need to shell out extra THB150 (US$4.50) for a 3MB data usage, just enough to send urgent emails. If you want bigger data usage, you need to cough up, hold your breath, THB460 (US$14) for 10MB.
The Wi-Fi service is, certainly, an improvement of the airline's inflight products but it wouldn't be a huge news to passengers who will get burdened by extra amount for its usage for too little data allowance.
