Thai has launched its inflight internet service dubbed Thai Sky Connect.

The latest innovative service offering from Thai Airways will fortify its slogan 'smooth as silk' which has become the epitome of world-class service standard in commercial aviation for decades.

The service will be offered aboard a fleet of A330 and A380 jumbo jets. This will enable customers aboard the flights to indulge themselves in a range of online activities at the comfort of their seats several miles above.

Thai Sky Connect is initially offered at long-haul international flights as well as regional routes across Asia. The wi-fi service will be powered by OnAir, the global leader in inflight Internet provider. It works just like the regular wi-fi hotspots you find anywhere on the ground like an airport or cafe.

The service, however, is not offered for free. Depending on the gadgets used, customers have to shell out extra bucks for wireless internet access ranging from US$4.50 via smartphone to US$28.50 via tablet or laptop.

A smartphone user can have two options to choose from in terms of size of downloaded data: 3MB and 10MB for $4.50 and $14.50 respectively. Those who use laptop or tablet will have two options as well: 10MB and 20MB for $14.50 and $28.00 respectively.

Users need to use their credit card to avail of the service.

The rate though is obviously much higher than what most of its competitors have offered. Singapore Airlines, for example, dishes out 10MB to wi-fi users for only US$10 and 30MB for US$25 only. Dubai-based Emirates, however, is more generous with its wi-fi service, as it is almost a giveaway, offering 100MB of data for only US$25!

Travelers aboard Thai flights will soon avail themselves of inflight mobile service dubbed Mobile OnAir, once the airline gets approval from Thailand's regulatory body. Customers need to switch on the roaming function of their phone before they can use the inflight mobile service.
