After attempts to pacify a drunk, unruly passenger, Thai Airways crew were left with no option but to tie him to his seat for the entire flight.
Thirty minutes before midnight, a Swiss male passenger of Thai Airways Flight TG971 started displaying unruly behaviour. The aircraft was flying to Bangkok from Zurich, Switzerland on Sunday when the commotion occurred.
Upon noticing such behaviour, flight crew made several attempts to pacify the passenger who was already cursing and throwing derogatory remarks at everyone on board.
According to a fellow passenger who witnessed the scene, the man was apparently intoxicated with alcohol and was clearly out of control. Unmindful of his fellow passengers, he recklessly went over their seats like a maniac on the loose. Female passengers and children in particular were shaken by the incident.
Other passengers helped to pacify the man but attempts were all in vain. Finally, as a last resort, it was decided that he be tied up for the remainder of the flight.
On situations where a passenger becomes unruly on board, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) strongly suggests that airline companies come up with preventive measures.
Based on a published IATA guide, such measures include educating passengers and airline personnel about airline SOP on disruptive behaviour, the Zero Tolerance approach, and the consequences of disruptive acts while on flight.
The association believes that prevention is key, adding that disruptive behaviour usually doesn't happen overnight. It is a result of a string of events that had gone unnoticed and had build up over time.
Meanwhile, Thai Airways crew immediately reported the incident to Bangkok authorities who took custody of the drunk passenger as soon as Flight TG971 reached the airport.
