International airports in Thailand under the management of Airports of Thailand have seen over 20% increase in international passenger traffic for the month of June, logging in a total of 4.23 million.
Including the domestic traffic, all six airports registered an overall passenger traffic of 6.54 million between them, or an increase of more than 19% over the same period last year.
The six international airports are the following: Suvarnabhumi Airport and Don Mueang International Airport in Bangkok, Phuket International Airport, Chiang Mai International Airport, Hat Yai International Airport and Chiang Rai International Airport.
Being the main international gateway in the country, Suvarnabhumi recorded the most international passengers passing through its portals for the month of June at 3.28 million. The figure recorded for this month is 5.2% increase over the same period last year. Its domestic passenger traffic, however, went down by 32.6% due largely to the departure of domestic carriers.
Overall, Suvarnabhumi Airport lost 3.3% of its passenger traffic over the same period last year, registering a total of 3.90 million for the month of June.
Don Mueang Airport recorded the highest increase among the six airports with a staggering and unprecedented 4,171% for its international passengers at 428,000. The massive increase of its international passenger traffic is due in part to a number of low-cost carriers who operate largely domestic flights but also offer regional flights to neighboring countries.
For the first half of this year, all six airports posted a total of 27.8 million international passengers or more than 19% increase over the six-month period last year. For overall passenger traffic, the AoT's network of airports posted an 18% increase over the same period in 2012, at 43.7 million.
