The first overseas venture of the long-haul brand of the budget giant AirAsia Bhd., Thai AirAsia is now gearing up to take off from its Bangkok hub on its inaugural service in June.

The budget local subsidiary of the long-haul brand, AirAsia X, has just launched in April 22 its domestic operations to introduce the brand to the local market. The airline is targeting more than 200,000 passengers during its first full year of operations.

According to Mr. Nadda Buranasiri, the airline's Chief Executive Officer, it will start with a Bangkok-Seoul service when it debuts in June 17 this year. It is targeting mainly long-haul Asian destinations, specifically South Korea, Japan and China, the three biggest markets in the region.

Over the following month, it will launch two more routes connecting Bangkok to two Japanese cities of Osaka and Tokyo. Though no definite date for its Japanese routes, the Tokyo service will operate from Narita International Airport.

Mr. Nadda said that the Thai aviation market has been growing at a tremendous pace following the introduction of low-cost travel in the country by Thai AirAsia, the first overseas venture of Malaysia-based AirAsia Bhd.

He added that during the first year of its operations, the company will focus on building its brand before expanding its routes to more destinations across Asia, especially China.

It will initially keep a fleet of two leased aircraft, the wide-body A330-300, for its maiden operations consisting of three initial destinations. It will increase its fleet as soon as it sees opportunity to open more routes earlier than originally planned.

The executive is very optimistic on the airline's future as the Asian region is seen to remain as the world's largest travel market.
