Last week, AirAsia got its first Airbus 320 from the Airbus Factory in France. This brand new aircraft is featured with fuel-saving sharklet wing tips. The acquisition of such aircraft, according to Tassapon Bijleveld, the airline's Chief Executive, is in line with the company's growth plan. It is targeted at the end of this plan in 2013 that AirAsia's fleet of 34 will consist entirely of A320s. The ultimate goal, however, is for the fleet size to reach 48.

China routes play an important role in AirAsia's network expansion. At present, China-bound flights include Guangzhou, Hongkong, Shenzhen, and Macau, in addition to Wuhan, Chongqing, and Xi'an which were recently added this year. Other destinations being considered include cities which are just 4 hours away from Bangkok, and also Chengdu, Kunming, and Hunan Province.

On the other hand, existing routes which will be given increased schedules are those from Don Mueang to Hat Yai, Krabi, Nakhon Si Thammarat, and Phnom Penh. More Chiang Mai-Hat Yai flights can also be expected.

At present, Thai AirAsia has a total of 87 flights daily on 30 destinations, 18 of which are international and 12 are domestic.

Malaysia AirAsia, meanwhile, was the first airline in the AirAsia group to acquire an A320 with the fuel-saving sharklet wing tips. This new A320 is AirAsia's 115th aircraft. Thirty-three more of these aircrafts will be distributed to other subsidiaries of AirAsia in 2013.

Just recently, AirAsia has also announced its plans of ordering 100 more A320s, with 36 of these being A320ceo aircrafts. All in all, AirAsia will acquire 475 new A320s from Airbus'264 A320neo's and 211 A320ceo's.
