Thai Air to Launch New Airline "Thai Smile"

Thai Smile, the new sub-brand airline of Thai Airways is set to start operating in July 2012.

The airline will operate domestic flights in Thailand to destination including destinations including Chiang Rai, Surat Thani, Khon Kaen and Ubon Ratchathani. International routes are scheduled to start in 2013 and will serve short distance destinations within Southeast Asia, India and China.

Four Airbus A320 aircraft will be used and this number is planned to increase to eleven in time to operate on the international routes.

Thai Smile will start flying in July next year. Chairman of the airline's board, Mr Ampon Kittiampon characterised it as a "light-premium airline segmented between full-service and low-cost".

Thai Smile Air will offer both economy class and premium class services and will operate from Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport.

The name was chosen from a naming competition, which had over 2000 entries.

Thai Airway's plans to launch Thai Tiger Airways, a Thai partnership with Tiger Airways, will not be disrupted as a result of this announcement, but there is still no firm date on the launch of this airline.

Thai Airways also owns Nok Air.
