Thai Airways International (THAI), Thailand's flag carrier, made a proposal to construct its own domestic terminal on Suvarnabhumi Airport's eastern wing.
This decision to rent the vacant area at Suvarnabhumi and transform it into a domestic terminal has been made to serve the increasing number of passengers on THAI domestic flights.
According to THAI president Sorajak, besides relieving the congestion in Suvarnabhumi Airport, the domestic terminal, which will be joined to THAI's international terminal, will also be good for the airline's image.
Under the proposed project 'TG domestic terminal', THAI will manage the space at the domestic terminal and any airlines that are planning to use it will be asked to pay rent. THAI will then pass the collected fees on to the Airports of Thailand Plc (AoT) annually.
However, this proposal has confused AoT, which claims that THAI's entrance to airport terminal business can cause disorder in the airport's management.
AoT's acting president Somchai Sawasdipol further expressed his puzzlement about THAI's reason in investing in the airport's development. According to him, they have already decided to rush the second-phase extension of Suvarnabhumi airport to solve problems of overcrowding.
Transport Minister Chadchat Sittipunt, who was consulted by THAI regarding the proposal, expressed that he will not oppose to the project. Instead, he advised THAI to submit the proposal to the ministry for review and approval.
At present, THAI are still appraising the investment costs, rental fees, and other particulars of the project.
On the other hand, the airline is due to sign an agreement with Airbus Industry Co. in mid-February to construct a business training center in Laksi, said executive vice-president of THAI's technical department Montree Jumrieng.
