After deciding to cut flights to Rome this year, THAI has changed its course and decides to continue flying to the region until early next year.

Initially, THAI is supposed to end its Bangkok-Rome flights starting October 2015 but made a last minute decision to continue said flight route until February 2016.

Right now it continues to fly non-stop to Rome, four times a week.

The airline's president, Charamporn Jotikashthira disclosed that THAI board of directors met on Monday, passing a decision to continue said flights. The board hopes to be able to feed the high demand for Bangkok-Rome flights now that peak months are fast approaching.

In July, the airline announced that it will cut its Bangkok-Incheon-LA and Bangkok-Rome flights. Cutting these routes form part of its overall plan to curtail operational losses.

However, some sources revealed that the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) had a hand in THAI's sudden change of heart as regards flight services to Rome. Reportedly, TAT as well as the tourism sector believe that discontinuing the service will have negative impact on Thailand's plans to boost the number of European tourists visiting the country.

Observers noted that THAI's board was able to make a swift decision on the matter because Areepong Bhoocha-oom, current secretary of Thailand's Tourism Ministry also serves as board chairman for THAI.

THAI representatives disclosed that TAT will assist THAI boost Bangkok-Rome travel via the airline's flight services scheduled four times a week on weekdays (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday) including Sundays. The Boeing 747-400 aircraft will be used for these flights.

The airline's earlier decision to cut both the LA and Rome flight services were justified by the fact that these flights have been identified as THAI unviable routes. The airline had to curtail these flights as part of its plan to revive its business.
