Following the country's successful removal of its Prime Minister, controversial issues regarding tourism in Thailand have started to emerge again gaining attention from Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT).

Foremost of which are the illegal taxi operations in the country's major airports by unscrupulous individuals and the equally illegal encroachment of commercial establishments onto the beach in popular resort destinations in the country.

Since the ouster of the Prime Minster and the subsequent declaration of martial law in the country, the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) has taken over as an interim government to fill the void vacated by the elected officials. Since then, it has taken responsibility for most of the country's state of affairs including its tourism industry.

Last week, NCPO issued statements to the public that the taxi operations in Suvarnabhumi Airport will be automated in response to the controversial issue on the rampant illegal operations. The fully-automated system will involve the use of electronic card which will prevent passengers from falling victims to abusive drivers.

Under the automated system, each driver has to accept the fare assigned to them whatever distance he will cover within the periphery of Bangkok.

The current fare of THB50 will remain the same for passengers from the airport to any point across the capital and its environs in addition to the flag-down rate of THB35.

The announcement by NCPO came on the heels of the recent clampdown on illegal operators at the airport last week.

It also initiated the clearing of over 100 illegal structures put up along the beaches in Bang Tao and Surin, as well as Layan and Laypang beaches in Phuket. It will undertake similar actions in other beaches in Phuket such as Kamala, Nai Ham, and Patong.

TAT officials are more than glad with the initiatives undertaken by NCPO in keeping the country's image as one of the world's most popular tourist destination in consistent to the latest tourism campaign, 'Amazing Thailand: It Begins With The People.'

TAT Governor, Mr. Thawatchai Arunyik, was very satisfied with the recent development in the country's effort to improve its image in the face of globalization.
