Thailand's premier airport, Suvarnabhumi Airport, is now gearing up to host an influx of travelers from around the world during the high tourist season that lasts for five months starting at the latter half of October to March.

According to Wichean Potephosree, Permanent Secretary for Transport, the international airport is expected to handle up to 23 million passengers passing through its corridors during the five-month period or a daily average of 150,000 foreign tourists from 800 flights per day.

The Minister observed that the country's premier gateway has eased its congestion after AirAsia moved its base of operation to the old Don Mueang Airport. AirAsia moved out from Suvarnabhumi Airport on October 1 following orders from the government to help ease congestion of Bangkok's major international airport which has been operating in full capacity since 2010.

International flights into Suvarnabhumi Airport have decreased considerably by over 134 on a daily average after the departure of AirAsia. The number of passengers, likewise, dropped by 20,000 on average daily or an annual average of 8 million.

To prepare itself for the high-tourist season, the Tourism Authority of Thailand is increasing the number of body scanning machines installed in the airport as well as putting up bigger space for its check-points. In addition, it has also installed 16 more automated passport checking systems to expedite the processing time from 45 to 20 seconds per passenger. As a result, it will be able to process some 7,200 passengers an hour from the previous 2,800 passengers.

The Suvarnabhumi International Airport is expected to handle up to 44.45 million international passengers during the fiscal year, October 1, 2012 - September 30, 2013.
