Suvarnanbhumi airport's eastern runway is set to undergo a 60-day maintenance period to facilitate resurfacing of the runway with asphalt. This is to make it more durable and efficient in withstanding the weights and speed of the aircrafts that run through it.

Anirut Thanomkulabut, the current President of the Airports of Thailand (AOT), said that since the opening of the Suvarnabhumi Airport six years ago, more than 1.5 million airplanes have used the runway. Although the airport's technical staff have tried hard to maintain the runway's integrity in the past years, its surface have inevitably become eroded.

Starting from June 11, until August 9, 1.6 kilometers of the runway will be closed, while the remaining 2 kilometers can still be utilized. He claimed that such measure may slightly impact the airport's overall operations, but the organizations that may be affected have already been informed about the maintenance project, so each of them will be able to adjust their operations.

It is said that the resurfacing will increase the runway's thickness by 10 centimeters. Also, only smaller planes and A320s will be allowed to use the opposite end of the runway.

AOT has already coordinated with other airports in Thailand in the event any airplane requires emergency landing. More contingency plans have already been put in place so as to make sure that the airport's operations will still run smoothly.
