As Suvarnabhumi Airport enters its second phase of its expansion project, airport officials are advising airlines to reschedule flights in and out of the airport to de-congest the facility.

The Thai Prime Minister has talked to the airport officials recently regarding the problem.

The Prime Minister assured the public that the daytime flights will be decreased and nighttime flights increased in order to hit the equilibrium. Currently, the airport handles more flights during at daytime which makes it too crowded with travelers during the day.

The project involves, among others, the expansion of its passenger terminal which is now in its second phase, costing about 62 billion baht. To increase its capacity, the airport is also constructing a third runway with a price tag of 13 billion baht.

Prime Minister Shinawatra also encouraged airlines to use Don Mueang Airport in order to relieve congestion at the busy Suvarnabhumi Airport.

She also created a working group to whom she give orders to find a solution to de-congest the airports of Phuket and Suvarnabhumi in two weeks' time.

The working group is headed by ACM Sumet Phomanee, the chairman of Airports of Thailand Plc. Other members of the group include representatives from Office of the National Economic and Social Development Board, Aeronautical Radio of Thailand Co. and Thai Airways International.

In order to come up with an effective airport development plans, transport authorities should work hand in hand with the Tourism Authority of Thailand. They should discuss, among other things, the trend of inbound tourists coming to the country in the past years and its projected growth in the years to come.

The 1.62 kilometer portion of the eastern runway of the airport is currently under repair. The repair will be completed by the end of this month, according to AoT official.

The AoT was advised by Transport Minister Jarupong to expedite the paying of compensation to the affected community by the noise pollution the two existing runways have created. Otherwise, they will possibly face opposition when the construction of the third runway starts.

AoT is obliged to pay a sum of 12 billion baht to the affected residents. It was reported that more than half of the recipients already received compensation while the rest will receive theirs towards the end of 2013.

Until the repair of the eastern runway is completed, Suvarnabhumi Airport won't be able to function fully in its capacity which is 76 flights per hour. With the ongoing repair, the airport is limited to use the western runway which has seen its handling capacity trimmed down to 55 flights an hour.
