Good news for Thailand and passengers using the new airport in the nation's capital Bangkok. The Airports of Thailand (AOT) recently announced the news that the second phase of the expansion of Suvarnabhumi Airport will be completed in 2016, a whole one year ahead of its scheduled completion in 2017.
According to Transport Minister Mr. Sukampol Suwannathat the Thai government intends to bolster Suvarnabhumi Airport's position as the region's flights centre. A sum of Bt62.5 billion will be spent on the second phase of the airport.
Acting Suvarnabhumi Airport Director Mr. Somchai Sawasdipol said the growth of Thailand's flights doorway would lead to AOT experiencing a lack of liquidity from 2014.
Mr Sukampol said that the AOT would also develop Don Mueang Airport, the old international airport now mainly used for domestic flights, in cooperation with Thai Airways International as a maintenance centre and aviation industry focal point. In the meantime the airport will continue to service chartered flights and private jets.
Don Mueang Airport suffered losses and damages to its infrastructure following this year's terrible floods, the mends to the eastern runway will be finished by February at a cost of Bt489 million while Bt1.25 billion is being spent to restore the western runway, which should be operational in January.
Mr. Sukampol added that the ministry has also instructed AOT to develop the increasingly popular Phuket International Airport and has allocated Bt5.7 billion to build an additional passenger terminal and the existing three-kilometre runway will be extended by another 500-700 metres to accommodate large aircraft from Europe.
When completed in a few years, Phuket International Airport will be able to accommodate 12 million passengers per year, nearly doubling its existing capacity of 6.5 million passengers annually.
