Nok Air's monopoly on the Bangkok-Sakon Nakhon route will be challenged starting this October as Thai AirAsia will commence a twice-daily direct service on the same route.

Sakon Nakhon is located in the northeastern region (Isan), Thailand's largest in terms of land area. The city has been growing popular to tourists, thanks to the direct air service put up by Nok Air. Unfortunately to Nok Air, its market will soon be disturbed with the entry of Thai AirAsia.

Last year, Thai AirAsia commenced a direct service to both Khon Kaen and Nakhon Phanom from Bangkok. Except for Khon Kaen, Nakhon Phanom has been a Nok Air monopoly since it started direct flights to the city.

Thai AirAsia's twice-daily service will be divided into a morning and evening flights. Customers can now book tickets on the said flights.

The direct service will be the fifth route for Thai AirAsia to the northeastern region after Udon Thani, Ubon Ratchathani, Khoan Kaen, and Nakhon Phanom.

The northeastern region of the country boasts of numerous and varied natural and cultural attractions, which range from religious temples, to national parks and scenic countrysides.

AirAsia group has been consistently awarded as world's best low-cost airline for many years, the latest of which is this year's honor bestowed by SkyTrax.

Thailand suffered its latest political upheaval when anti-Shinawatra protesters staged nationwide mass actions on November 2013, which lasted until they successfully removed Pres. Yingluck Shinwatra from office in May this year. The country's tourism industry suffered a beating as many countries issued travel advisories to its citizens against traveling to Thailand. As a result, international tourist arrivals declined by almost 10% during the first quarter of this year.

Thai AirAsia officials, however, are optimistic that the country's tourism industry will bounce back towards the last quarter of this year. That's the reason why they are launching another route to the northeastern region.

Sakon Nakhon province is an interesting destination as a whole boasting a wide variety of attractions ranging from man-made to natural. Man-made attractions include major Buddhist relics like Phra Tat Sri Mongkol, Phra Tat Phu Pek, Phra Tat Cherng Chum, Phra Tat Narai Cheng Weng, and Phra Tat Doum. It is host to the amazing Phu Phan National Park that harbors natural wonders like enchanting caves, virgin forests, and waterfalls.
