The codeshare agreement signed recently between the Gulf behemoth, Qatar Airways and Bangkok Airways of Thailand is expected to boost each carrier's traffic and therefore extend their reach beyond their respective route networks.

Qatar Airways is one of the world's only six five-star rated airlines whose route network spans across all six inhabited continents in the world. It currently flies to more 125 international destinations from its hub in Doha. It will soon move its base of operations in the new Hamad International Airport, which is still undergoing finishing touches.

Bangkok Airways, on the other hand, is a regional airline based in Bangkok, Thailand. With its extensive domestic route network across Thailand and across the region, it is one of the fastest-growing regional airlines in Southeast Asia. Apart from Thailand, the carrier also flies to Phnom Penh in Cambodia and Yangon, Myanmar.

Qatar Airways' CEO, Akbar Al-Baker was glad to have Bangkok Airways as its partner in the region as it will enable customers to connect seamlessly beyond its main ports of call of Bangkok and Phuket in Thailand. From Bangkok or Phuket, passengers of Qatar Airways can now hop in to Bangkok Airways domestic or even regional flight to continue on their journey.

Mr. Al-Baker said that their alliance with a major Thai domestic airline can benefit their customers who fly with them because Thailand has been one of the most sought-after destinations in Asia.

Bangkok Airways don't currently fly to the Middle East or beyond its regional turf in Southeast Asia but its passengers can now benefit immensely with its partnership with Qatar Airways whose extensive route network covers all inhabited continents.

As a result, Bangkok Airways passengers who want to fly out of Thailand to any destinations in the world that Qatar Airways serve, will no longer need to book a separate or possibly multiple flights. They only need a single booking in Thailand and a short lay-over in Doha before proceeding at once to their final destinations.

Mr. Al-Baker further said that Thailand has a lot to offer in terms of tourism potentials to a lot of their passengers who fly with them on leisure travel.

The Gulf carrier currently flies non-stop between Doha and Bangkok on a four-times-a-day frequency. It also operates a once-daily service between Doha and the resort island of Phuket, Phnom Penh and Yangon.

Qatar Airways keeps a fleet of 124 aircraft while Bangkok Airways has 23 planes in its fleet.
