The second phase of expansion at the Suvarnabhumi airport in Bangkok is scheduled for June this year, the chairman of the Airports of Thailand board Mr. Prasong Poontaneat revealed.

The much awaited construction will begin as soon as the bidding is complete and the best contractors are chosen. The bidding for the best construction projects on Suvarnabhumi will start earlier in March.

The first stage of expansion is worth 18 billion baht (around 5 billion USD$) and comprises of three construction projects. The second phase, on the other hand, will be significantly larger and more expensive. It will include a total of seven construction projects and will be worth 51 billion baht (over 14 billion dollars) altogether.

In addition to all of that, the expansion also includes a project to install public utility systems, worth 2.56 billion baht. This project will include a water supply and an electricity system, as well as chill water system for ACs.

As a part of the expansion project, the new airport's apron (pave strip around the hangars and terminals at the Suvarnabhumi airport) will also be constructed. This will cover an area of 960,000 square meters. This way, the airport will be able to house 28 jets at any given time, including 8 Airbus A-380s or similarly-sized super jumbo.

The project also includes a taxiway which will lead passengers to the apron. This will cost 14.9 billion baht in total.

In addition, the project also includes an installation of a monorail system or people mover that will connect the existing terminal with the new one (2.8 billion baht), an extension of the east-end passenger terminal and car park (4.68 billion baht), installation of a detector for explosives and baggage handling system (6,1 billion baht).

Finally, a new midfield satellite concourse building with a tunnel linking the existing tunnel to it is also planned. This project will be worth 17.4 billion baht.

Once the second phase of the expansion is complete, the Suvarnabhumi airport will be able to handle up to 60 million travellers per year. At the moment, the airport has the capacity for 45 million guests per year.

Phase 2 of constructions is expected to be over with in 2019.
